When the prayer prays for you
It’s inspiring to know that the prayers we whisper—even the ones we never speak—find their way into the light.
The first solo show I ever created was about Bessie Coleman—the first Black woman in the U.S. to earn a pilot’s license. Producing the solo show felt like I was flying the plane, navigating, and serving snacks all at once. It was exhausting and exhilarating.
One night after a long rehearsal, I had a late-night costume fitting with my brilliant designer, Rolande. She’d created this stunning aviator jumpsuit, complete with hidden butterfly wings to symbolize Bessie’s transformation. Everything was finally coming together. I was soaring.
Until, at midnight, we walked outside and saw glass on the ground. My car had been broken into. My bag, my stuff—gone. My script, my wallet, my ID, my blue show flyers, even a roll of laundry quarters—taken.
Everything I needed to keep the production of the show moving forward— missing, vanished, gone!
I cried all the way to the freeway… and then Something stopped me.
I don’t know if I was praying, but I know I was guided.
I listened to that guidance.
My heart was pounding, tears blurred my vision, but I heard it:
“Go back. Get your stuff.”
I turned the car around, followed the energy, and found myself under the 7th Street bridge in downtown L.A., face-to-face with two men surrounded by my blue flyers.
And somehow… I wasn’t afraid.
You see, I believe in the buildup of prayers—those layered prayers from years of faith, from loved ones, ancestors, and the Divine Itself. Sometimes we don’t need to start praying in the moment because the prayers have already gone ahead of us.
Sometimes, faith doesn’t look like folded hands—it looks like a U-turn in the dark. It looks like trusting your inner compass even when the outside world says, “You’re crazy.”
Whether you’re releasing a creative project, taking a big risk, or just trying to make it through the week, here’s what I want you to remember:
- You don’t have to have it all together—just the courage to begin.
- You don’t have to know the way—just trust that the next step will be shown.
- You don’t have to go it alone—just remember who walks with you.
Holly, you’ve already been doing that. Every time you’ve followed that quiet nudge or made the brave choice even when it didn’t make sense—you’ve been building your own legacy of prayer and trust.
What happened? Nearly everything was returned—my purse, my wallet, even my script.
The only thing missing? A few bucks and a roll of quarters.
I still marvel at the fact that I was guided—not by logic, but by a Presence that knew the way.
And from there, I was able to keep going. I finished the show. I told Bessie’s story. And I flew.
This is the kind of spirit and power I’ve poured into two new offerings I’m thrilled to share with you:
